Die Welt praises Greek Prime Minister Tsipras

Berlin (DPA) — The German conservative daily Die Welt praises Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in an editorial Friday for his efforts to turn his country around. The paper writes, in part:

“The West is experiencing a leadership vacuum. Far and wide, there is no figure to be seen who exudes moral or political authority – and who at the same time gives citizens guidance and a sense of security in turbulent times. There is nobody whose star shines brightly across borders anymore.

“With one exception: Alexis Tsipras. The left-wing populist prime minister of the Syriza party came to office as an outspoken critic of Brussels’ austerity policy who criticized German Chancellor Angela Merkel most rudely on the campaign trail. “But once in office, Tsipras implemented a serious reform and austerity programme. Initial signs of an economic recovery are now discernible. That is a considerable achievement.”
