Roaring 20s And Roaring Stock Market
It was 1929. World War I was over, radio was brand-new and exciting, and President Calvin Coolidge had said Americans had “a more pleasing prospect” than they’d ever had before in his recent State of the Union. More people were buying automobiles, formerly luxury machines for the very rich, and the stock market was soaring. Soaring? It went through the roof. The Dow Jones Industrial Average got four times larger between 1924 and 1929. (Wall Street traders are shown in this picture.) America was right there on the brink of greatness.

Traders Gather In Front Of The New York Stock Exchange
The stock market crash began on October 24th and ended on the 29th. In a matter of days, around $30 billion in value would disappear from the stock market.
On the first day of the crash, speculators, worried about the fall of their financial securities, gathered in front of the New York Stock Exchange.
