Rescue dogs trained how to fly a plane for new TV show

Rescue dogs trained how to fly a plane for new TV show.As part of a new TV show to find the world’s first canine ‘pilot’ twelve rescue dogs will be given the chance to reach for the sky .

They were whisked away to a Sussex mansion for ten weeks of training and problem-solving tests ahead of the flying challenge.

The dozen dogs taking part in Sky 1’s Dogs Might Fly were chosen from the 100,000-plus stray dogs picked up by UK councils in 2014-15.

“People give up on them too easily and this series will show us why we shouldn’t,” explained presenter Jamie Theakston. They are just as deserving and just as intelligent.”

He added: “Even if a dog has been deprived of human contact or has been badly treated, it is just as able and motivated to initiate a new relationship with a human very quickly.”

Scientists looked at their memory, reasoning, communication and empathy during the training period, with the most intelligent dogs being sent to flight school to train in a single-engine aircraft. One will eventually be chosen for the plane flying challenge.

A clinical animal behaviourist and a police dog trainer helped prepare the dogs for the challenge.

Stanley Coren, professor of canine psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver believes it is unlikely a dog would be able to fly a plane

“Given that we would not expect a human three-year-old to be able to fly a plane, I would not expect that a dog could do so either,” he told The Independent.

Each of the dogs will be rehomed after the TV show has finished.

An animal charity in New Zealand previously taught three dogs to drive in an attempt to highlight their intelligence and encourage more people to rehome rescued animals.

The dogs were taught to start a car, accelerate and steer.

Meanwhile, this drink drive suspect claimed his dog was driving the car.
