Merry “Graysmas”:– When children in Beijing woke up on Christmas morning to find empty stockings, some were told by parents that Santa Claus got lost in the smog-covered metropolis, where the air quality index reading topped 500 downtown.
Beijing’s weather observatory issued an air pollution orange alert on Friday morning after air quality deteriorated again to “severely polluted” on Christmas Eve.
Twitter user Sim Sim Wissgott joked that it is a “different kind of white Christmas” in Beijing, as the hazardous haze reduces visibility to the extent that windows appear shrouded in layers of white gauze.
