{"id":19308,"date":"2020-07-22T14:09:35","date_gmt":"2020-07-22T11:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bestinsurance.gr\/a1\/?p=19308"},"modified":"2020-07-22T14:09:35","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T11:09:35","slug":"turkey-rejects-greek-claims-in-mediterranean-waters-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bestinsurance.gr\/a1\/archives\/19308","title":{"rendered":"Turkey Rejects Greek Claims in Mediterranean Waters Dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By\u00a0Onur Ant<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<section><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(Bloomberg) &#8212; Turkey rejected Greece\u2019s argument that its energy exploration in the eastern Mediterranean encroaches on Greek territory, suggesting tensions in the region will remain high.<\/span><\/section>\n<section><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The seismic survey ship Oruc Reis will evaluate an area that was previously covered by another Turkish ship and lies within what Turkey declared to the United Nations as its own continental shelf, the country\u2019s foreign ministry said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Turkey will carry out the surveys until Aug. 2, while Greece\u2019s armed forces are on standby monitoring for Turkish movements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Greek shares fell as much as 1.3% on Wednesday, extending declines after dropping the most in more than a month on Tuesday with sentiment burdened by the dispute. The\u00a0Athens Stock Exchange General Index\u00a0was down 0.9% at 1:45 p.m. in Athens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tensions between Turkey and Greece have flared over issues such as oil and gas exploration in the shared waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas as well as\u00a0flow of refugees\u00a0through Turkey to European countries. The latest conflict came as a result of Turkey\u2019s declaration that it will conduct seismic work from July 21 in the eastern Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Erdogan\u2019s Libya Gamble Turns Mediterranean Into Sea of Troubles<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Greece\u2019s Prime Minister\u00a0Kyriakos Mitsotakis\u00a0spoke with\u00a0Angela Merkel\u00a0on Tuesday evening when he informed the German chancellor about developments with Turkey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Merkel also addressed the issue in a phone conversation Tuesday with Turkish President\u00a0Recep Tayyip Erdogan, deputy government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said. Without offering details of the conversation, Demmer said Germany\u2019s position is \u201cwell known.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During a visit to Athens Tuesday, Merkel\u2019s foreign minister,\u00a0Heiko Maas, demanded that Turkey end its drilling off the coast of Cyprus. The EU must deliver a \u201cclear\u201d response to any such activities in the eastern Mediterranean, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis is the condition for there to be any future-oriented dialog between the European Union and Turkey,\u201d Maas said alongside Greek Foreign Minister\u00a0Nikolaos Dendias. \u201cThere is a great deal of unity on this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2018Illegal Actions\u2019<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek foreign ministry asked Turkey to \u201cimmediately stop its illegal actions that violate Greece\u2019s sovereignty and undermine the region\u2019s peace and security.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ankara rejects the argument that the area is part of Greece\u2019s continental shelf. The foreign ministry said the Greek island of Meis in the area &#8212; covering 10 square kilometers &#8212; is two kilometers away from the Turkish mainland and 580 kilometers off the Greek coast, making \u201cGreece\u2019s maximalist continental shelf claims incompatible with international law and court decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Erdogan will chair an ordinary meeting of the national security council later Wednesday, when the Turkish president is expected to discuss the Mediterranean tensions with his top lieutenants.
