The contagiousness of the so-called coronavirus, which causes a lung illness dubbed Covid-19, has\u00a0<a title=\"Bill Gates commentary in NEJM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp2003762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp2003762&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEBV8fIGEq5FtZqpvJZJgACSJzk9A\">health experts worried<\/a>\u00a0it could become a pandemic to rival some of the most devastating in recent decades. Meanwhile, the outbreak is causing turmoil in the global economy and financial markets.<\/p>\n<p>(This story updates with new infection toll and fresh details on what authorities are doing in section 10 and economic impact in section 12.)<\/p>\n<h3>1. What makes this virus so worrying?<\/h3>\n<p>It has been described as \u201c<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-2\" title=\"Studies Portray China Virus as \u2018Insidious\u2019 and Similar to SARS\"><\/a>insidious\u201d because many infected people are well enough to go about their daily business, unwittingly spreading it to others. As of\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-3\" title=\"Global Fatality Rate 3.4%; Olympics Delay Possible: Virus Update\"><\/a>March 3, the fatality rate was about 3.4% based on globally reported cases, the\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-4\" title=\"Company Overview\"><\/a>World Health Organization\u00a0said. Such numbers are\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-5\" title=\"Coronavirus\u2019s True Lethal Power Still Eludes Disease Experts\"><\/a>unreliable\u00a0in the early stages of an outbreak, however. Some disease-modeling experts project as many as\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-6\" title=\"Coronavirus May Soon Peak in Wuhan With 500,000 People Infected\"><\/a>hundreds of thousands\u00a0of people are actually infected, most of whom don\u2019t even know they have it. How does this compare with other outbreaks?<\/h3>\n<p>A related coronavirus killed 9.5% of patients in the 2002-2003 epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, and another known as MERS-CoV has led to death in\u00a0<a title=\"Link to WHO Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/health-topics\/mers-cov\/mers-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/health-topics\/mers-cov\/mers-outbreaks.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFgU0IaOW2XjWJjA-ktqv0nlybNbw\">34%<\/a>\u00a0of the 2,499 cases recorded since 2012. In those outbreaks, however, the viruses didn\u2019t transmit from one person to another as efficiently as this new one\u00a0<a title=\"CIDRAP report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/news-perspective\/2020\/02\/study-72000-covid-19-patients-finds-23-death-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/news-perspective\/2020\/02\/study-72000-covid-19-patients-finds-23-death-rate&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFSDr3YipoU96gLBmug6BEy7z4Glw\">appears to do<\/a>. Certainly, they didn\u2019t\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-11\" title=\"Mapping the Coronavirus Outbreak Across the World\"><\/a>spread as widely\u00a0as fast. In the worst pandemic in recent history, an estimated 50 million people died in the 1918 influenza pandemic that had a case-fatality ratio of\u00a0<a title=\"CDC report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pandemic-resources\/1918-pandemic-h1n1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pandemic-resources\/1918-pandemic-h1n1.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFJ4uPaU5c0olN_JF7kIjMN3xA1SA\">about 2%<\/a>\u00a0but infected as much as a third of the world\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"m_860523596541667898328930\"><a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-13\" title=\"How Covid-19 Stacks Up Against Other Infectious Diseases: Chart\"><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" tabindex=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/ci6.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/7RLnoLcMbuXBuPYCVgmcoKISBhO0CefOEFV6A_b0qH_vtF7B4GZT8mLcmQpHRBGvhBbD4iNHHsnLhbiedFMx0OvQrQab93MpBvq7PTpMKyjRmXwOIXBexD7znDvLvA=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/iFPP7MV0_ugE\/v3\/640x-1.png\" \/><figcaption>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>3. What does the virus do?<\/h3>\n<p>Symptoms begin to appear on average\u00a0<a title=\"WHO report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFizTJTFrPSbgf8d8CE5_UGRKALrg\">five to six days<\/a>\u00a0after infection. Infections appear to cause a mild illness lasting about two weeks in children, adolescents and younger adults in most cases, and potentially more severe disease lasting three to six weeks in older people. Frequently reported early signs are fever, dry cough, tiredness and sputum production. In severe cases, studies suggest the virus invades cells in the lower respiratory tract, causing difficulty breathing and the inflammation and congestion associated with pneumonia. In an early study, more than a quarter of hospitalized patients developed a complication known as\u00a0<a title=\"WHO pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/clinical-management-of-novel-cov.pdf?sfvrsn=bc7da517_4&amp;download=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/clinical-management-of-novel-cov.pdf?sfvrsn%3Dbc7da517_4%26download%3Dtrue&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGgANPtLALv1bLNMVSZ8w7wTRXtow\">acute respiratory distress syndrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Who\u2019s most at risk for complications?<\/h3>\n<p>It appears to be the elderly and those with other serious health issues. Many of the fatalities have been in patients with underlying illnesses such as cardiovascular disease. A Chinese\u00a0<a title=\"Click to view webpage.\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/cmrivers\/ncov\/blob\/master\/COVID-19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/github.com\/cmrivers\/ncov\/blob\/master\/COVID-19.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFdiUsk1uVCiup1fGiYa718O3e1hg\">study<\/a>\u00a0of 72,000 cases found most deaths occurred in patients over 60 years old. Of all confirmed cases, 81% were mild, 14% were severe and 4.7% critical. The last pandemic, an outbreak of a new strain of H1N1 flu in 2009, infected an estimated 61 million people in the U.S. alone and may have\u00a0<a title=\"Link to website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pandemic-resources\/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pandemic-resources\/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHAPXHqYA_SOlYFxQrCYsS2N2AFow\">killed<\/a>\u00a0as many as 575,000 people worldwide in the first year it circulated &#8212; with about 80% of them younger than 65, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/p>\n<h3>5. How do people contract it?<\/h3>\n<p>By coming into contact with virus-containing\u00a0<a title=\"Link to New England Journal of Medicine Paper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1056\/NEJMe2001126?articleTools=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1056\/NEJMe2001126?articleTools%3Dtrue&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHzqA9mPakDR6teGcFBjV2Z1DKdVw\">droplets<\/a>\u00a0that are emitted when an infected person coughs or sneezes, according to the WHO\u2019s first\u00a0<a title=\"WHO report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEeXyUcl6n_h6Xn8MBQp2lfKqMKxQ\">comprehensive report<\/a>\u00a0on Covid-19. These droplets can be transferred directly to someone else in close proximity or via hands and surfaces. How long it survives on surfaces is\u00a0<a title=\"Click to view webpage.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/q-a-coronaviruses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/q-a-coronaviruses&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEzyZ0OQoJzeT4pHnN6lo76sCJxyA\">still not known<\/a>, but preliminary studies suggest coronaviruses may remain infectious from a\u00a0<a title=\"WHO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/q-a-coronaviruses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/q-a-coronaviruses&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEzyZ0OQoJzeT4pHnN6lo76sCJxyA\">few hours<\/a>\u00a0to a few days. Simple disinfectants kill it. There\u2019s a theoretical risk the virus can spread through\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-22\" title=\"Fecal Transmission May Be Behind Coronavirus\u2019s Rapid Spread\"><\/a>feces\u00a0or\u00a0<span id=\"m_8605235965416678983e2b8c67c-5fcb-11ea-940a-308d99724420\">farther<\/span>throug<wbr \/>h the air in tiny particles known as\u00a0<a title=\"Virologydownunder.com\" href=\"https:\/\/virologydownunder.com\/flight-of-the-aerosol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/virologydownunder.com\/flight-of-the-aerosol\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG7V6P90DN7Q8ySDsiPxGjOVIRqHw\">aerosols<\/a>. People who are still incubating the virus and\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-24\" title=\"Coronavirus Spreading in Munich Shows Difficulty Halting New Bug\"><\/a>show no symptoms\u00a0may spread it. Health authorities are concerned about what\u2019s known as\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-25\" title=\"U.S. Identifies First Coronavirus Case Without Outbreak Ties (2)\"><\/a>community spread, where the virus begins circulating freely among people outside of known contacts with other patients.<\/p>\n<h3>6. How contagious is it?<\/h3>\n<p>Epidemiologists try to gauge contagiousness by estimating the number of additional people a person who is infected is likely to infect. That measurement, called a basic reproduction number or r0 (pronounced \u201cr naught\u201d), is one indicator of how difficult an epidemic is to control. A study of an outbreak aboard a cruise ship estimated that the r0 for Covid-19 was\u00a0<a title=\"article\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ijidonline.com\/article\/S1201-9712(20)30091-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ijidonline.com\/article\/S1201-9712(20)30091-6\/fulltext&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGUu7jFEDW6n6Ww7t9qp91vIrIlkA\">2.28<\/a>\u00a0during the early stages. That would make it more infectious than seasonal flu, which has an r0 of\u00a0<a title=\"research paper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/265345236_Estimates_of_the_reproduction_number_for_seasonal_pandemic_and_zoonotic_influenza_A_systematic_review_of_the_literature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/265345236_Estimates_of_the_reproduction_number_for_seasonal_pandemic_and_zoonotic_influenza_A_systematic_review_of_the_literature&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775235000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFiVX34SUA9WY6iFCWdU8OdsjkCpQ\">about 1.3<\/a>\u00a0and killed an estimated\u00a0<a title=\"cdc.gov\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/burden\/2017-2018.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/burden\/2017-2018.htm&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775236000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE4Ee49sr3fTJeVm3jiTl5QCXPGFg\">61,000<\/a>\u00a0people in the U.S. in the 2017-18 season.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Could warming weather help combat it?<\/h3>\n<p>The viruses responsible for influenza spread more easily during cold weather because they\u00a0<a title=\"Harvard paper\" href=\"http:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/flash\/2014\/the-reason-for-the-season-why-flu-strikes-in-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/flash\/2014\/the-reason-for-the-season-why-flu-strikes-in-winter\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775236000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGndFhezB2KkfGK6ZKIqoHDhc-DPw\">survive longer<\/a>\u00a0in cold, dry air. But there\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"CDC factsheet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/faq.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775236000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFeu9b6Wf2X-KUEuOPAVSCluH2CDg\">no evidence<\/a>\u00a0to suggest the Covid-19 virus would be affected by weather.<\/p>\n<h3>7. What\u2019s a coronavirus?<\/h3>\n<p>Coronaviruses are named for their crown-like shape. There\u2019s a\u00a0<a title=\"cdc.gov\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/index.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775236000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHkw10_QWXjZzyyxhN0ukehIxb6pQ\">large family<\/a>\u00a0of them, responsible for diseases that range in severity from the common cold to MERS. Some transmit easily from person to person, while others do not. (<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>8. Where did it come from?<\/h3>\n<p>The virus emerged in early December in Wuhan, an industrial city of 11 million and capital of Hubei province. Early attention focused on a seafood market where live animals were also sold, but about a third of the first 41 cases were found to have no link to it. The viral genome is closely related to several coronaviruses\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-33\" title=\"Coronavirus Likely Began With Bats, an Omen for Next Epidemic (2)\"><\/a>found in bats. Diseases transmissible from animals to humans, sometimes referred to as\u00a0<a title=\"Link to WHO Information\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/zoonoses\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/zoonoses\/en\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775236000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGs4M-ls5CsNTDmbpIzTrtXEBUfng\">zoonoses<\/a>, comprise a large percentage of all newly identified infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<h3>9. How alarming is a new virus?<\/h3>\n<p>There is always concern when a new human pathogen emerges because people typically\u00a0<a title=\"Link to CDC Information\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2020\/t0117-coronavirus-screening.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2020\/t0117-coronavirus-screening.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1583665775236000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG2yjGjMF0yaf80rl3-ckMqmVKGOA\">lack immunity<\/a>\u00a0to it and there usually aren\u2019t specific\u00a0<a id=\"m_8605235965416678983url-id-36\" title=\"The Search for New Drugs for Coronavirus Faces Long Odds\"><\/a>treatments or vaccines\u00a0available.
