It has not crossed the 20 percent threshold, widely viewed as the definition of a bear market.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, 245 stocks in the S&amp;P 500 &#8211; 49 percent of its components &#8211; on Monday had fallen 20 percent or more from their 52-week highs. Another 127 S&amp;P 500 stocks had fallen 10 percent or more from their 52-week highs, but less than 20 percent.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fingfx.thomsonreuters.com\/gfx\/mkt\/11\/3481\/3465\/Bear%20market%20stocks.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fingfx.thomsonreuters.com\/gfx\/mkt\/11\/3481\/3465\/Bear%20market%20stocks.png\" alt=\"Reuters Graphic\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Graphic: Half of S&amp;P 500 stocks in bear market &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tmsnrt.rs\/2zOJImb\">tmsnrt.rs\/2zOJImb<\/a>)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The index on Monday was down about 11 percent from its Sept. 20 record high close.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple Inc (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=AAPL.O\">AAPL.O<\/a>), until recently Wall Street\u2019s most valuable company and the largest component of the S&amp;P 500, has declined 27 percent from its record high on Oct. 3, accelerating the index\u2019s losses as investors fret over cooling demand for iPhones.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pessimism has spread beyond the S&amp;P 500 to smaller companies across the U.S. stock market, with hundreds of stocks hitting lows for the year on a daily basis in recent sessions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fingfx.thomsonreuters.com\/gfx\/mkt\/11\/3480\/3464\/Pasted%20Image.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fingfx.thomsonreuters.com\/gfx\/mkt\/11\/3480\/3464\/Pasted%20Image.jpg\" alt=\"Reuters Graphic\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Graphic: Stocks hitting 52-week lows &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tmsnrt.rs\/2SBWw6w\">tmsnrt.rs\/2SBWw6w<\/a>)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">S&amp;P 500 components deepest in bear market territory include Nektar Therapeutics (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=NKTR.O\">NKTR.O<\/a>), Coty Inc (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=COTY.N\">COTY.N<\/a>) and General Electric Co (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=GE.N\">GE.N<\/a>), each down more than 60 percent from its 52-week high.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft Corp (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/finance\/stocks\/overview?symbol=MSFT.O\">MSFT.O<\/a>), which in late November dethroned Apple as Wall Street\u2019s largest company, is down 8 percent from its Oct. 3 record high.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fingfx.thomsonreuters.com\/gfx\/mkt\/11\/3482\/3466\/Furthest%20fallen.png\" alt=\"Reuters Graphic\" \/><\/figure>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurt by worries about global growth, the S&amp;P 500\u00a0 on Monday fell as much as 1.89 percent before reversing course and ending the session with a 0.17 percent gain, trimming its loss so far in December to 4.44 percent.
