Greece ought not to be one of them.<\/p>\n<p>After all it has been through in the past six years, the arrival of tens of thousands of\u00a0refugees from across the Aegean may in fact be giving the country a mild, <a title=\"Link to IMF website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/pubs\/ft\/sdn\/2016\/sdn1602.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-web-url=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/pubs\/ft\/sdn\/2016\/sdn1602.pdf\" data-tracker-action=\"click\" data-tracker-category=\"nav\" data-tracker-label=\"inline_link.02\">short-term stimulus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of millions of euros have been spent so far to provide shelter, provisions, and support to migrants and asylum seekers, in a period when government-funded spending has taken successive cuts.<\/p>\n<div data-view-uid=\"1|0_3_1_10\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-image inline-media center \">\n<div class=\"inline-media__unlinked-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/ivXEFhuFKUe0\/v2\/488x-1.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/ivXEFhuFKUe0\/v2\/488x-1.png 488w, https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/ivXEFhuFKUe0\/v2\/628x-1.png 628w, https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/ivXEFhuFKUe0\/v2\/750x-1.png 750w, https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/ivXEFhuFKUe0\/v2\/-1x-1.png 1200w\" data-attachment-key=\"305603305\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Thousands of staff, from social workers to engineers \u2014 both from international and non-governmental organizations \u2014 as well as local contractors, have been deployed to support the gigantic operation of hosting more than 60,000 people stranded in Greek facilities.<\/p>\n<p>A government-commissioned study from April this year, shows that the impact of that effort on Greek gross domestic product could range from neutral to positive by 0.3 percentage points. Having won an exemption for refugee spending from budget targets, it&#8217;s the positive scenario that&#8217;s now more likely to materialize.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[expander_maker more=&#8221;\u0394\u03b9\u03b1\u03b2\u03ac\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5 \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1&#8221; less=&#8221;\u0394\u03b9\u03b1\u03b2\u03ac\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5 \u03bb\u03b9\u03b3\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b1&#8221;]The\u00a0European Commission\u00a0says that it has\u00a0<a title=\"Link to European Commission\" href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/dgs\/home-affairs\/what-we-do\/policies\/european-agenda-migration\/background-information\/docs\/20160928\/factsheet_managing_refugee_crisis_eu_financial_support_greece_-_update_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-web-url=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/dgs\/home-affairs\/what-we-do\/policies\/european-agenda-migration\/background-information\/docs\/20160928\/factsheet_managing_refugee_crisis_eu_financial_support_greece_-_update_en.pdf\" data-tracker-action=\"click\" data-tracker-category=\"nav\" data-tracker-label=\"inline_link.04\">approved\u00a0almost 200 million euros<\/a>($220 million) in funding for projects related to the refugee crisis in Greece this year.
